The Origin of Trick or Treat
Every Halloween, millions of kids knock on doors and ask one simple question:
“Trick or treat?”
In this trick or treat documentary narration by Marc Scott, we explore how this beloved Halloween tradition began — a story born from faith, fear, and sweets that’s been passed down for over a thousand years.
The Story Behind “Trick or Treat”
It started over a thousand years ago in medieval Europe. People went “souling” — visiting homes and offering prayers for the dead in exchange for small cakes.
Later in Scotland and Ireland, it became “guising” — children dressing up as spirits to collect coins or food, and to ward off the real ones.
When Irish and Scottish immigrants came to America, those old customs followed. By the 1930s, “trick or treat” appeared in print — a playful bargain: give us a treat, or we’ll play a trick.
After World War II, sugar rations ended — and candy companies turned it into big business. Today, it’s pure fun. But every time a kid yells “trick or treat,” they’re carrying on a thousand-year-old tradition born from faith, fear, and sweets.
