Long before pumpkins… there were turnips.
And the first Jack-o’-Lanterns weren’t decorations — they were warnings.
It began in Ireland, with the legend of Stingy Jack — a man so clever he tricked the Devil himself.
But when Jack died, heaven wouldn’t take him… and hell refused to let him in.
Condemned to wander the dark, he carried a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way.
Villagers began carving their own lanterns to scare his spirit away — glowing faces meant to keep the damned at a distance.
When Irish immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins — bigger, softer, and perfect for carving.
The tradition followed… and so did the legend.
So every Halloween, when candles flicker behind those carved orange faces… remember — you’re not just celebrating. You’re keeping Stingy Jack away.
