Did you know the world’s most prestigious restaurant rating…
started with a tire company.
In 1900, brothers André and Édouard Michelin wanted people to drive more — and buy more tires.
So they printed a free guide for motorists:
maps, repair shops, and — most importantly — places to eat along the way.
As cars became common, the Michelin Guide became the traveler’s bible.
And in 1926, they added a rating:
one star for “a good meal,”
two for “worth a detour,”
and three for “worth a special journey.”
What began as a marketing gimmick…
turned into the global gold standard for fine dining.
Today, chefs around the world chase those same stars —
proving that a company built to sell tires…
ended up shaping the taste of the world.
